Chronograph watches: Japanese VK63, VK64 and TMI movements

A chronograph lets you measure an elapsed time without interrupting the display of the hour. The 12 models in this collection use Japanese movements — chiefly the Seiko VK63 and VK64, along with TMI VD55 and VK67 calibres.

Why the VK63 is well regarded

The VK63 is what's known as a meca-quartz movement: timekeeping is electronic, but the chronograph is triggered mechanically. The result is a seconds hand that snaps back to zero, as on a mechanical chronograph, while keeping the accuracy and the price of a quartz. It's a solution you rarely find below €300 from traditional brands.

Counters that genuinely work

Every counter on these models is live — that isn't a given in this price range. Cases run from 39 to 44.5 mm and water resistance from 30 to 100 metres. For sport or water use, choose the 100-metre (10 bar) models.

Prices from €80 to €160.
